MOUNT NELSON MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH HISTORY

In May of 1889 a committee from First Baptist Church in Goldsboro, NC was formed to look into the feasibility of starting a mission in the northern part of Wayne County. Some time after, on February 15, 1891, First Baptist Church of Goldsboro adopted the Constitution for the mission church.

On April 1891 the new church appointed a building committee, and on August 16, 1891, the church met in conference and voted to name the church Mount Nelson Missionary Baptist Church in honor of its founder, Reverend Charles Johnson Nelson. Pastor Nelson was known as a businessman (in the buggy making industry), Sunday School Worker, Church Founder, circuit rider preacher, and a missionary. Today his business and home still exit on the corner of John and Pine Street in Goldsboro, NC.
